Getting Back-to-School Ready Without the Last-Minute Panic!

ad. Although the summer holidays have only just begun, I’ve learnt over the years that back-to-school shopping is one job that’s much less stressful when you don’t leave it until the very last minute. As a mum of three, I know just how quickly school uniform sizes disappear, shoes sell out and those final days of August suddenly become a frantic rush.

This year, my youngest daughter is getting ready to start Year 3 and, rather than scrambling around at the end of the holidays, we’ve decided to get organised early. Having everything ready well in advance means we can enjoy the rest of the summer knowing that one of the biggest jobs is already ticked off the list.

The three things we always buy first

The first thing I always prioritise is a good pair of school shoes. Children spend so much time wearing them every day that comfort and durability are just as important as how smart they look. We chose a pair that my daughter loved straight away and she’s already been wearing them around the house to make sure they’re comfortable before the new term begins.

The second essential is school uniform. Before buying anything new, I always go through last year’s clothes to see what still fits and what needs replacing. It saves money, reduces waste and means you’re only buying what you actually need. Fresh polo shirts, a new cardigan and a couple of spare items always make the first few weeks much easier.

Finally, a kids backpack is something children genuinely get excited about. My daughter couldn’t wait to pack hers with her pencil case, water bottle and favourite notebook. Choosing a backpack that’s practical, comfortable and big enough for everything they need makes those busy school mornings that little bit easier too.

Making the first morning easier

One thing that’s transformed our back-to-school routine is preparing everything the night before. Uniform is laid out, shoes are by the front door and the backpack is packed ready to go. It only takes a few minutes, but it makes such a difference when everyone is trying to get out of the house on time.

I also like to start easing the children back into their school routine during the final week of the holidays. Earlier bedtimes, practising the morning routine and chatting positively about seeing friends again all help make the transition feel much less daunting.

Very Back to School

Helping children feel confident

Going back to school isn’t just about having the right uniform or supplies. For many children it’s a mixture of excitement and nerves, especially if they’re moving into a new year group or meeting a new teacher.

We always spend time talking about what they’re looking forward to, answering any worries they might have and reminding them that everyone else is feeling exactly the same. A little reassurance goes a long way, and being well prepared helps children start the new school year feeling much more confident.

Our back-to-school checklist

Before September arrives, I make sure we’ve ticked off the essentials:

  • School uniform washed and labelled
  • Comfortable school shoes ready to wear
  • Backpack packed with stationery and water bottle
  • Lunchbox ready
  • PE kit checked
  • Hair accessories and socks stocked up
  • Earlier bedtimes reintroduced
  • School paperwork / admin completed

Getting organised early means we can spend the rest of the summer enjoying family days out instead of rushing around the shops. If you’re beginning your own back-to-school preparations, Very has everything from school uniforms and shoes to backpacks and everyday essentials in one place, making it easy to get everything sorted before the new term begins.
