The Mead School is a co-educational preparatory school for children aged 3 to 11, dedicated to nurturing the whole child and building the foundation for a bright future. Just moments from the historic Pantiles, in the very heart of Tunbridge Wells, The Mead offers an exceptional education rooted in high academic standards – delivered within a genuinely happy, caring, family environment.

Children at The Mead learn and grow across 105 acres of land throughout Tunbridge Wells – a combination of our own town-centre site and our network of partner venues around the town. It’s the best of both worlds: the intimacy and convenience of a school based right in the heart of Tunbridge Wells, with access to professional grounds, pitches and facilities.

Academic Excellence and Personal Growth

Academic rigour sits at the very centre of a Mead education. The inspectors have singled out pupils’ attitudes to learning as outstanding, noting the genuine pride children take in their work and their proactive approach to every subject. The Mead has built a strong track record of success in the Kent Test and secures places at the highly selective Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge Grammar Schools, as well as a wide range of top independent and maintained secondary schools. 86% of our 2026 children were assessed suitable for a grammar school with over 50% of these gaining a score of over 380 suitable for the counties most selective schools.

That academic ambition starts early. In our purposeful Early Years programme, children as young as three benefit from firm foundations being laid in core subjects as well as specialist lessons right from the start in French, PE, Swimming, Performing Arts, Music, Judo and Ballet – a breadth of curriculum, taught by specialist staff, that gives our youngest pupils one of the richest and most effective academic starts in the area. By the time children are in upper KS2 all lessons are taught by leading teachers.

Alongside strong outcomes, every pupil is encouraged to grow physically, culturally, morally, socially and spiritually, supported by a wide range of extracurricular activities and educational visits. The Mead has a long history of excellence in Performing Arts and Sport, and that excellence continues to be recognised: the school has recently been commended in the Music and Drama Awards 2026 and named among the Independent Schools of the Year 2026, adding to previous recognition from Independent School of the Year and Muddy Stilettos.
