From birth, children are naturally active learners, with an innate curiosity to explore and discover the world around them. It is this philosophy that forms the heart of Hilden Grange’s approach to the Early Years. We have embraced the principles of Hygge and the Curiosity Approach, encouraging the children to develop their imaginations through a mix of teacher-led and child-centred approaches.
We believe these principles, which develop the ability to think, be creative and imaginative, embody the essence of childhood. They provides a firm foundation for an educational experience based on the joy of learning, where active learning and critical thinking play a central role. Above all we hope to develop resilient independent learners.

Making the most of the Hilden Grange environment…
We achieve this by having children outside on a very regular basis and embracing nature, playing, exploring and discovering. Our Forest School leader takes the children on nature sessions every week, rain or shine, making the most of the Hilden Grange environment which provides huge scope for exploring the natural world whether it’s pond-dipping, autumn rambles or a winter walk topped off by a session of roasting marshmallows over the fire pit.
Children love our bespoke outdoor learning area. It’s an absolute joy to watch them totally immersed in their play, becoming travel agents in the role play area, climbing the tangle logs, visiting the underground Hobbit House, creating magic potions in the mud kitchen, digging for treasure in the sand pit or simply enjoying their freedom with a companion. All of these activities are carefully designed to spark a host of fun learning experiences. For example, in the water play area the children use their gross motor skills as they pump the water, develop their hand-eye coordination as they scoop and pour, submerge their senses, start to grasp concepts of volume and weight, and engage in social and cooperative play as they share materials and ideas.

Inside the classrooms…
The philosophy continues inside the classrooms, which are open, welcoming spaces, filled with natural light and natural materials. Again, the focus is on risk-taking and developing their imaginations. Children from the Nursery upwards benefit from specialist teaching in Drama, Music and Sport. They also play a central role in the life of the school, attending Pre-Prep and Prep School assemblies and participate wholeheartedly in school life, taking part in science week, Creative Arts Week, Sports Day and charity events.
There are also a variety of clubs that the Early Years children can enjoy after the school day and an After School Care facility until 6pm.

Children can join Hilden Grange’s Nursery in the term in which they turn three. We welcome applications for children who have a confirmed place in Reception. If you would like to visit and view Hilden Grange’s Early Years setting for yourselves we would love to meet you.
