The wait is over for the Tunbridge Wells Lantern Parade to illuminate the town on Saturday and there’s still time for your family to take part! There’s also still time to grab a free ticket for this weekend’s Build It Live, an ideal day out for anyone embarking on a self-build project.
Enrol on a cookery course for kids or enjoy a Little Mix tribute at the Assembly Hall Theatre on Saturday morning. Not forgetting Junior Parkrun, a Mum2Mum market, senior school fair, book club, visit to Dinotropolis and more!
♥ Get your lanterns ready to light up the sky or just enjoy the sights at Tunbridge Wells Winter Lantern Parade on Saturday (8th February). Starting from 17 Calverley Road, and parading along Camden Road, then finishing at the Grosvenor and Hilbert Park, where there will be music and a range of refreshments from local organisations. This year’s theme is ‘Magic!’ – it’s going to be a real spectacle!

From 11am to 12.50pm enjoy four fantastic singers and dancers who capture the look, sound and dance moves of this best loved girl band, performing all Little Mix favourites in this non-stop, high-energy show ‘We Love Little Mix’.

♥ Every Sunday morning at 9am there is a Junior Parkrun in Tonbridge at the Farm Sportsground on Darenth Avenue. This 2k event is just for 4-14-year olds, is free to register and the aim is to have fun, running at any pace and there’s marshals along the course so runners are in sight at all times. I imagine that the kids have a great time, experiencing participating in their very own event like this and then finding themselves in the photos afterwards.
♥ Do you need a post-Christmas clear-out of toys, children’s clothes and equipment? There is still time to book a table at the Mum2Mum Market Kings Hill Community Centre on Saturday from 2-4pm to sell your pre-loved items to someone else. Or pick up a bargain yourself with 2for1 entry when you download a voucher here.
♥ There are still a few spaces for budding Mary Berry’s on Cookie’s Kitchen Tonbridge ‘Creative Cooks’ course. Every Saturday at 10am-12.30pm your 10-16-year-old will learn to make at least one recipe from scratch and the best bit is they will bring everything they make home to taste! They will also learn basic hygiene, safety in the kitchen, and very important, to clear away afterwards, in a friendly atmosphere. Suitable for all levels of experience.
♥ Meet representatives from 40 of the most prestigious senior schools across the UK at Brambletye School’s Senior School Fair, on Saturday morning from 10am-12pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for any parents already embarking or about to begin the journey to choosing a senior school. A shuttle service will run from East Grinstead train station. Book your attendance now.
♥ Younger book worms can look forward to the next book club at Waterstones Tunbridge Wells on Sunday 9th February at 3pm. This month they will discuss the heart-warming story of a Golden Retriever ‘I, Cosmo’; trying to fix a family in this modern-day classic by Carlie Sorosiak.
♥ A bit further afield this time, The Rare Breeds Centre near Tenterden is a fantastic family day out. Located on over 100 acres of beautiful Kent countryside, there are lots of activities, both indoors and outdoors, to keep the children entertained. Try out the tractor rides, meet the animals, birds of prey, creepy crawly world and burn off some energy in the indoor play barn. There are adventure courses and a play area for the little ones too, as well as a restaurant and gift shop. The kids are bound to like the zip-wire, hill fort and tube maize and look out for storytelling on Wednesdays! Tickets are just £8.00 per person (winter prices) while under 3’s go for free. Plus, you’ll be supporting the Canterbury Oast Trust charity that run the centre and their amazing support of adults with learning disabilities. Winter opening hours apply until 1st April – Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4.30pm.
♥ Located in Bluewater Shopping Centre, my kids always find it a real treat to go to Dinotropolis. It’s three storeys of soft play, but with animatronic dinosaurs, dino interactives, raptor go-karts, a dino escape challenge (for older kids) it’s so much more! go on a fossil dig, a sandpit for building volcanoes and café. My boys especially love the craft corner, where they paint and draw dinosaurs then bring them to life on the huge interactive screen, dig for fossils and build volcanoes in the sandpit. Every weekend this month, an entertainer will be offering free face painting or balloon modelling to your little rangers. It is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment. This is a great indoor activity, that lasts 1hr 30 min, with an onsite cafe and hopefully means you can squeeze in some shopping or a meal in one of the many family restaurants.
♥ If you fancy a complete change of scene and like us, love a bit of rock pooling and fossil hunting, head on down to Birling Gap and pretend you’re on holiday! Located between Eastbourne and Brighton, Birling Gap is one of the longest stretches of undeveloped coastline on the south coast, with an array of rock pools to explore when the tide goes out. There’s a National Trust Café to warm up in (currently open from 10am-4pm) with views of the sea and a visitor centre where you can pick up family activity packs for the beach and enjoy some seasonal nature colouring. Remember to check tide times and the weather beforehand HERE.
