Do you have a little monster – or two – lurking at home? Do they like stories that are a little bit scary – but not TOO scary?! The Tunbridge Wells Puppetry Festival is approaching fast and features a lovely show for children aged three to five on Friday 11th October.
Little Monster is an exciting, brand-new puppetry adventure about facing fears and finding friends! Touched Theatre directors, Darren East and Beccy Smith, who are based in Brighton, create their shows with their son in mind and, like me, believe that children are never too young to be introduced to the magic of theatre! If you came to the Puppetry Festival back in 2017, you may have caught their enchanting sellout show Twinkle Twinkle, which was also at the Assembly Hall Theatre.

In Little Monster, the audience is invited on a magical journey to find the mysterious monster that’s sent everyone else off hiding. Helped by two hapless, hopeless storytellers and their big bad book of rhymes, they venture into the forest, peek into deep, dark caves, build walls and knock them down. Will they find monsters? Hmmmmm! I can’t guess!
Taking your child to the theatre is always a special event and this show looks really gorgeous, with magical shadows, live songs and the unique, lovable puppets that Touched Theatre are renowned for.

Little Monster opens the three-day festival on Friday 11 October, but if you can’t make it, there’s masses more going on all over the weekend, all over town – the Moomins show on Saturday is for ages 4-7 (Camden Centre) and The Hunting of the Snark, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s madcap poem, is on Sunday at the Forum (4 and up). There’s also a family drop-in spoon-puppet workshop at Trinity Theatre on Saturday afternoon with theatre company Rust and Stardust – go and take a look at their amazing and beautiful puppets while you’re there! The programme is full of unusual theatre and events, so do check it out below – the festival comes but once every two years!
When & Where? Little Monster is at the Assembly Hall Theatre on Friday 11 October at 11am and 1pm.
