7 Tips for Keeping Your Dog Healthy

When you have a dog, you have a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders. You’re going to have to make sure that you are caring for this animal, keeping it alive, and keeping its environment clean and healthy. If you think you’ve got the parenting routine down for a dog, that’s great.

But you do need to make sure that you are giving your dog the nose to tail care that he absolutely needs. You can start by Googling a vet near me and then start working on how your home will be best served to be a good place for a dog to live. Then, take a look at these 7 tips for keeping your dog as healthy as possible.

  • Look at his diet. If you’re not sure how often or how much to feed your dog, you need to speak to your vet and get some great advice. The age, the size and the breed of your dog really does matter when you think about how much they eat and how quickly they eat. Choosing a food with a great balance of nutrients and measuring out according to the instructions will keep your dog at a healthy weight, keep their skin and coat clean and clear of bugs, and keep them healthy. It might be tempting to give them table scraps or other people’s food, but you can add unnecessary weight and cause some issues in their digestion. Those big puppy dog eyes are great, but they are not going to help him or keep him healthy.
  • Are you offering enough water? You should always ensure that your dog has fresh, clean and cold water in his bowl. If you make sure that this is the case, then he will always drink the amount of water that he needs. They should be drinking about half an ounce of water per pound of body weight, so a 50 LB dog should make sure that they are drinking 25 to 50 oz per day. Having their water available to them all day will help here.
  • Exercise him. Dogs need to be active or you’re going to end up with a dog that is barking and distressed in the house. You should make sure you’re going for a walk or a run at least twice a day, but you should also incorporate game playing like tug of war or fetch or even hide and seek inside the house. Dogs really do thrive on activities like that and you can help to burn off their very big energy levels. Lots of dogs like to be able to chase a ball into a lake and other dogs love to be on the beach. But as long as you are choosing dog friendly parks and beaches, you can make sure that your dog is exercised.
  • Make sure that you are grooming your dog properly. Brushing your dog regularly does so much more than just get rid of unwanted hair that can be trapped on the furniture or in your clothes. It’s a good way to make sure that your dogs have healthy skin and healthy coats. You might also miss out on parasites such as fleas or ticks if you’re not brushing their coats regularly enough. A dog that is ill will often lose their fair and have bald spots on their coats and you’ll notice this a lot quicker if you are grooming with him regularly. In the time to do this is vital for his long term health.
  • Brush his teeth. You might not have realized this, but dogs do need to have their teeth brushed.Starting good brushing habits while they’re young will help them to get used to dental care, and that will prevent a lot of health issues. You can check their gums when they’re tongue for there being a healthy colour, and you can use brushing and dental chews or toys to ensure that their teeth are sparklingly healthy. Bringing your dog to the vet for a professional cleaning every so often. There’s also a good way to ensure that he has healthy teeth, healthy gums and no cavities.Of course it’s going to come down to diet, but a vet is going to be able to help you to make sure that your dog is going to be healthy.
  • Keep an eye on his paws. If you are living somewhere hot, then making sure that your dog is comfortable in the summer is important. A good way to do that is to prevent their little paws from burning. If you put your hand on the ground and find the ground to be very hot, then you need to make sure that you are not taking your dog out in that kind of heat.
