I’m not that keen on the expression of a ‘forever home’ as I like to aim for the stars and don’t want to limit myself. However in reality, there are some definite additions I would love to make to my current home in order to make it into a dream home and somewhere I could see myself staying at for years and years. With that in mind, here are four exiting plans for my dream home…
1. Converting the garage
This is top of my list because it will give us so much more space and I can see that our double garage could make an absolutely lovely and much needed second living room. I would love a big bay window at the front and perhaps bifold doors onto the sunny garden at the back.
It would definitely have a large and luxurious L-shaped sofa and a big bookshelf with all of our favourite reading material. An enormous flatscreen TV is a must and I guess as the kids turn into teenagers then games consoles and whatever technology is needed should be included in there too.
2. Exciting ensuite
This is the first time we have owned a house with an ensuite and I have to say it is such a pleasure to have our own bathroom. However our ensuite is very dated and could do with a massive revamp. The whole thing needs to be replaced really.
I would choose some gorgeous tiles, a classic suite and perhaps some funky tongue and groove flooring. I would make sure that the storage space is cleverly done and accessorise with some really modern and fun mirrors, towels, fixtures and fittings as well as frames and prints.
3. Garden office
At the moment I use a co-working space in central Tunbridge Wells (with Office Tribe) and am really happy with it for the days when I want to work away from home and feel like seeing other people. However I really need a quiet and warm space at home to get my work done and working from a 10 year old’s bedroom probably isn’t ideal!
I think the best option for this would be to have a garden office built. Nothing particularly fancy but somewhere I can have a lovely desk set up with my two big screens, a mini fridge, a sofa /relaxation area and maybe some storage for some of the products I feature on my site and social media. I know there are some fantastic options out there these days and I’m looking forward to looking properly at some point.
4. Replace those windows
The windows in our current home haven’t been replaced since the house was first build in the late 70s. They aren’t particularly visually appealing and they do tend to fog up quite a bit through the night. We have a moisture zapper to use around the house in the mornings but it would be much better to replace these windows to double-glazed.
When we lived in the centre of town in a converted victorian property, we ended up getting replacement sash windows and it was completely worth the investment. They were robust, looked fantastic and kept out the cold! It had been so draughty before we had them replaced and the difference it made was unfathomable. I assume it would be similar if we replaced the windows here. Plus the front door too, as we fell like we are loosing a lot of heat from there…
None of these things will happen straight away (or even at all?) but I think it is good to have a plan about what we would ideally like to do over the coming months and years. Of course this may change, but a girl can dream!
