How Do Chores Support My Child’s Overall Development?

Chores play an important role in a child’s overall development. They teach them about cleanliness, accountability and how much you do for them. We have teamed up with an independent primary school in Cambridge to explore a few of these benefits and why they are so instrumental in raising a responsible child.

Managing Responsibilities

Chores add an additional layer of responsibility which children have to juggle and manage to make time for their friends and school work. This can teach them about how to manage time effectively and efficiently.

Accountability

Chores teach children about accountability, keeping to their promises and doing what’s expected of them. Learning this at a young age can help them ease into the world of work so that it’s not so much of a shock when the time comes. This can instil a good work ethic and an understanding of hard work, so they’re not afraid of putting in a little graft.

Organisation

By getting your child to clean up after themselves, you can teach them about organisation and get them in the habit of keeping their room tidy. This can stop them from losing their homework and other important resources needed for school which can save them a detention or two.

Respect

As your child gets stuck in, they’ll begin to appreciate what you do around the house and start taking more care of it.

Teamwork

Without everyone pulling together to do the chores, it can be a lot of work for one person to do by themselves. It requires commitment from all parties which can teach children about team working and shared responsibility.

Life Skills

Washing up and doing the laundry are basic life skills that your child will need to be able to live an independent life once they flee the nest. This can be great preparation when they leave for university and make sure that they can take care of things if you’re ever away.
