Once you’ve moved into your first home, most of the stress is over for now – unless of course, you leap into extensive renovations right off the bat. In time, you’ll more than likely look to make the place your own, potentially having whole rooms remodelled and even extending. In the interim though, you may be after some quick fixes that will improve the look and feel of your home without a lot of stress or upheaval; here are a few quick fixes that you can make to your home to improve it…
Change the locks
Knowing that there isn’t anyone out there that might have a key that fits your locks can provide a lot of peace of mind, particularly if you’re new to home ownership and feel extra conscious of branching out alone. Find yourself a local and reputable locksmith who can change the locks on your front and rear doors (and maybe even the windows), leaving you safe in the knowledge that only you can access your home.
Clean before you unpack
Before most of the unpacking is done, giving the whole place a good clean will make you feel like you’ve got a blank canvas to work from, and generally make it feel like you’re not living in someone else’s home. Get hoovering, mopping, and thoroughly cleaning the kitchen and bathroom – don’t forget to run round with a feather duster to beat those cobwebs.
Get fresh carpets installed
Unless you get lucky, the existing carpets in your new home are unlikely to be exactly to your taste, and may, in some instances, not be the cleanest. Getting new carpets installed can take very little effort on your part if you enlist the help of professional carpet installers, but can make rooms feel like a whole new space, particularly thanks to that new carpet smell!
Get the drains cleared
This might not be something you think of immediately when you move into your new home, but it’ll clear any residual blockages left by the previous owners of the property, saving you stress and inconvenience in the future. Some drainage contractors, such as The Drain Guys, who clear blocked drains in Tonbridge, offer drain surveys which can highlight any issues, even before you move in!
Refresh the kitchen cabinets
While you may want to completely redo the kitchen, chances are you could do with settling in first, and besides, your bank balance may need a break too. In this case, if the structure of the kitchen cabinetry is still sound and they’re not gloss units, you could consider painting them and changing the handles. A different colour, finish and handle style can make all the difference; so much so that you might not need to renovate the kitchen as soon as you thought!
Swap out the appliances
You may be left with some legacy appliances from the previous owners of the home, and if this is the case, it might be a little weird to use someone else’s washing machine or fridge, for example. Getting your own appliances is a quick and simple way to make you feel like you’re making an upgrade to your first home, without too much upheaval.
