6 reasons to visit Munich for a city break

I first visited Munich in my early twenties for a work project and was blown away with what an amazing city it is. Since then, I have been back to Munich for a city break several times and always recommend it to friends who are looking for a cosmopolitain, diverse and tourist friendly city to visit.

It is with great pleasure that I have put together my top 10 reasons to visit Munich which I hope you’ll find useful if you are planning to stay there too.

Marianplatz & Christmas Markets

Whether you visit Munich in summer or winter, there is always plenty to discover at Marianplatz, the city’s central square. Personally, I love visiting the square most during the festive season for its equizate Chritstmas markets know as the Christkindlmarkt. The atmosphere is amazing and you’ll be able to stock up some gorgeous gifts too while sampling lots of the local food and drink on offer too.

Nymphenburg Palace

Located in Munich’s wester district, the The Nymphenburg Palace is a beautiful Baroque palace known as one of the premier royal palaces of Europe. Unbelievably its frontal width of 632 metres even surpasses Versailles Palace! The palace was originally planned as a summer residence for the Bavarian monarchy and was expanded over time. Spend the day there exploring the places and its English-style gardens. Discover the geysers and waterfalls as well as the stunning interior. Not to be missed!

Exploring Munich by Bike

Have you ever been to Munich and wondered why there are so many historical buildings but not one skyscraper in the old town? It is such a lovely city which is best explored by bike. Feel like a local and go on a beautiful journey through the historic part of Munich. A detailed guide and one day itinerary can be found here: https://www.besttime2travel.com/munich-by-bike

Great choice of accommodation

No matter what your budget is, there really are some fantastic options to suit everyone. We have stayed at plush 5 star hotels to much more simplistic but clean and functional accommodation and they have all had their own charm. Ideally get Ebooking sooner rather than later, so that you can have the best selection to suit your budget. Personally we like staying somewhere central so that we can just wander around mostly by foot, however the transport links are wonderful too so really it is up to you…

Oktoberfest and/or Beer Gardens

I’m sure you must have heard of Oktoberfest before? I think it is a bit like marmite – you’ll either love or detest the sound of this annual folk festival which usually welcomes more than six million people from around the world or you’ll prefer to visit Munich at a quieter time. Regardless of when you visit, you need to go and visit one of the many beer gardens to enjoy a ‘steiner’ of the good stuff. I was actually pregnant on one of my trips there and managed to keep it a secret from my friends by having a big pint of non-alcoholic beer. They had no idea!

Car Crazy

Car fans will love visiting BMW Welt. Known as a combined exhibition, delivery, adventure museum and event venue located in Munich’s district Am Riesenfeld, next to the Olympic Park, BMW Welt is at the BMW Headquarters and factory. Visitors can marvel at 125 of the brand’s most valuable and attractive automobiles, motorcycles and engines as well as experiencing the history of a global brand. Have a look at the events calendar beforehand too as there are plenty of exciting experiences throughout the year too.

Museums galore!

Munich is full of marvellous museums which you can spend hours, actually days, visiting. Some of them are great value for money and on Sundays, many of them charge just 1 Euro to enter. With over 80 museums in Munich to choose from, some of our favourites to visit include the Munich Residence, Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst as well as the Bier- und Oktoberfestmuseum. But to be honest, they are all well worth a visit.
