Salli Hall Head of Prep at Kent College

For this month’s My Tunbridge Wells Meets interview, I chatted with Mrs Salli Hall, Head of Prep at Kent College. Salli shares her tips for choosing a school for your child as well as some of her favourite places around Tunbridge Wells. Plus more!

♥ When did you join the team at Kent College?

I joined KC 13 years ago, became Deputy Head in 2017 and became Head of Prep earlier this year.

♥ What do you like most about your new role as Head of Prep?

I never know what each day will bring; I am learning something new every day and I love that.

♥ And least?

There isn’t enough time in the day to do everything I want to!

♥ What sets Kent College apart from other schools?

I think there is a perfect balance here between a kind and nurturing environment and preparing the children to be ready for anything, whatever they may face when they leave KC. There’s an attitude which pervades the entire school of ‘giving it a go’ and learning not to be afraid of mistakes; I think that’s what makes children stronger and better able to achieve what they want to achieve.

Our outstanding setting and facilities, the family feel and sense of belonging you have when you come here and where each child is known as an individual. We are surrounded by fields and woods so it feels like we are in the middle of the country; the environment is beautiful and it feels like an entirely safe and natural place for children to develop and thrive but at the same time is just a 10 minute drive from Tonbridge or Tunbridge Wells

♥ Do you live locally to Tunbridge Wells?

I have lived in TW for 25 years. It is a brilliant place to live and bring up a family.

♥ Do you have any hidden gems you would like to share?

Hurst Wood – the most excellent place for walks, collecting kindling wood and seeing bluebells.

♥ Where’s your favourite place to eat out around Tunbridge Wells?

There is a fantastic range of places to eat but I have really loved The Mount Edgcumbe during this last year which sits right on the Common with a lovely covered outdoor space.

♥ Where is your favourite place to take family or friends who come to visit you?

I really do love the Pantiles; the coffee shops and weekend markets and the sense of surprise and history that visitors feel when they first enter the Pantiles.

♥ Would you like to share some useful tips for parents who are choosing a school for their child?

It’s a bit like choosing a home. When you walk in to a school, you will want to have that feeling that you could belong there. Your children will absolutely be part of the fabric of the school but you as a family will too. So you have to feel comfortable with the ethos of the school and that is partly understanding what the school is about and partly a gut instinct.

♥ What would you like to achieve over the next five years? Either professionally or personally

I would like to see our outdoor education provision at KC develop and become recognised as an important part of the rounded education we provide. I don’t think we should underestimate the power and significance of outdoor learning in promoting lifelong learning and developing critical thinking.
