End of an Era: Sankey’s on Mount Ephraim to Close Ahead of Major Transformation

One of Tunbridge Wells’ best-known restaurants is preparing to close its doors for the final time in its current form as part of a major redevelopment project.

Sankey’s on Mount Ephraim has announced it will temporarily close on Sunday 31 May after 35 years in business, with plans already underway to completely reimagine the site ahead of a relaunch later this year.

The restaurant, which first opened in 1989 as a traditional white tablecloth dining venue, has become a familiar fixture on Mount Ephraim and a popular destination for seafood lovers across the town and beyond.

In a statement released this week, Matthew Sankey, owner of Sankey’s Hospitality Group, said funding had now been secured to redevelop the site and create “something designed for the next generation of hospitality”.

Work is expected to begin shortly after the restaurant closes at the end of May, with the new-look venue scheduled to reopen in the autumn.

A New Chapter for Sankey’s

Matthew said the decision “marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both the business and the wider Mount Ephraim area”.

He added: “Since opening in 1989, Sankey’s has continually evolved with the times, and now the moment has come to do so once again.

“This is an opportunity to refresh, reposition and create something for the next generation.”

Memories Made on Mount Ephraim

The announcement is likely to spark nostalgia among many Tunbridge Wells residents, with generations of diners having celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions at the restaurant over the past three decades.

I even celebrated my own 30th birthday there with close friends ‘a few’ years ago… but who’s counting?

Customers and former staff members have also been encouraged to share their memories of the venue over the coming weeks.

Despite the temporary closure, Sankey’s has confirmed staff will continue working across its other businesses, including The Old Fishmarket on The Pantiles and The George & Dragon in Speldhurst.

He continued: “We feel incredibly fortunate to have such loyal guests, an exceptional team, and the support of the vibrant Mount Ephraim community behind us.

“Some of our greatest memories have been made within these walls, and over the coming weeks we would love for you to share yours with us too.

“To all of you who have worked at Sankey’s over the years, and to everyone who has dined with us, celebrated with us, and supported us along the way – thank you. We salute you.”

What Happens Next?

Sankey’s has yet to reveal full details of what the redeveloped venue will look like, but more information is expected ahead of its autumn reopening.

For now, regulars still have a short window to visit the restaurant in its current form before it closes at the end of this month.

Farewell to Mount Ephraim – for now. And huge congratulations to Matthew and the entire Sankey’s team as they begin this exciting new chapter. We look forward to sharing more details about the restaurant’s future very soon!
